Happy Birthday!

Posted May 22, 2007

On this day in 1990, Microsoft released Windows 3.0. Apple wasn't happy.

Apple filed suit, claiming that Bill Gates and the boys had basically ripped off its operating system. (Gates had been shown an early version of Apple's OS in 1981 by no less than Steve Jobs, when the two visionaries were still playing nice.) But a federal judge threw out all but nine of the 189 charges filed in that suit, leaving Microsoft basically free to become the Redmond Monolith.

May 22 is also World Biodiversity Day. The International Day for Biological Diversity (or World Biodiversity Day) is a UN-sanctioned international holiday for the promotion of biodiversity issue (Wikipedia).

It's also my birthday today. I celebrated by buying the new Battles album and the Once soundtrack in iTunes. I think that's about as out of control as my 31st birthday will get.

Happy Birthday Mike!

I saw Pirates of Silicon Valley a couple weeks ago, and the part where Jobs finally realises that Bill Gates ripped him off was pretty surreal - He got smooth talked by Bill big time, and when he realized what happened it was too late.
