I megaheart GarageBand
Okay, so the true test for GarageBand was seeing how it would deal with recording live instruments. I dug out all my music stuff, and the ol' Les Paul and set everything up. It took me awhile to get the USB audio thing I have working, but once I figured it, GarageBand shined. I sent a clean guitar signal into GB, and the amps inside there are just great. Clean sounding, great distortion, it's all there. I laid down a quick jazzy beat, and laid down a few guitar parts. It's a little out of tune (I haven't played the Les Paul in awhile, and it needs new strings badly) but it kinda rocks. I can't wait to really start digging in and coming up with some cool stuff.
Here's a link to tonight's guitar test. Go easy on me, I haven't played in a long time. Update: About 12am I uploaded a new, remixed version of the track, less out of tune guitar with a bit more percussion, I think it sounds way better.

So what's the difference between GarageBand and Soundtrack?

Posted by: Mike at January 20, 2004 12:19 AMthe first one is cool typical amount of interesting that you always have in your electronic.. the second one reminded me of santana for some reason. cool though.
Posted by: justin at January 20, 2004 1:01 AMAwesome, man. You RAWK. ;P
Seriously, sounds great. Nice to hear you on that guitar.
Posted by: alan at January 20, 2004 1:09 AMI ordered the oxygen 8, mostly because it was still cheap ($139), and its small(25 keys)... as that i dont have much room for stuff... plus through musicians friend it included a case for free..
hey when you recorded your guitar, did you find the line in, a little quiet or are you using something different to get the guitar feed.... when i run my bass or guitar the line is a little quiet.... and even worse when I run a mic, i even put the line in volume on system prefs up all the way. Im thinking I might have to try using an amp as a preamp to the line in.
Posted by: mike wolf at January 20, 2004 10:37 AMIs there anything you can't do, Mike?
You're dreamy! *sigh*
Kristen, as far as GB and Soundtrack and the differences, the biggest one is ST doesn't allow you to record instruments or use the software instruments. It seems to be loop-based only. It also works with Final Cut where you can score to your video and use the scoring markers you set in FCP. GB doesn't do that, instead its more for creation from scratch, though you can use loops.
Mike, for recording the guitar I put the guitar right into a USB pre-amp clean (no regular guitar amp) then right into GB. The distortion on the guitar is one of GB's amp settings. I think they sound really decent, especially for sending it a pretty clean signal.
