Progressive Field

Posted January 11, 2008

Progressive FieldThe Cleveland Indians announced today that the field formerly known as Jacobs Field, a great ballpark which pales only in comparison to PNC Park* in Pittsburgh, will now be known as Progressive Field.

I could care about naming rights and all that - I, and the majority of Indians fans, will still call it the Jake. I still call the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh the Civic Arena. Did so today in fact.

Progressive Field just doesn't shorten to anything. With Quicken Loans Arena and now Progressive Field, I can only imagine what terrible name the Browns stadium will get.

* - PNC Park is a stupid name. I believe ballparks, especially those funded by tax monies should be named for the communities their in, or tie somehow to the area. PNC Park should not be PNC Park, it should be Clemente Field or something like that.

My memory is extremely fuzzy on this, but when the Jacobs family sold the Indians to the Dolans, there was a clause that said the new owners could not change the name of the stadium for a set amount of time. I remember it being longer than 8 years but I am probably wrong.

With the Quicken Loans Arena, I always thought it was funny that they gave themselves their own nickname. If I knew someone who gave themselves their own nickname I would goof on them completely.

Lastly, the only reason I have hope for Browns Stadium is that it is owned by the city. Even though they have that weird four sponsored gate thing, here's hoping it holds out longer.
