So that's what warmth feels like

Posted December 4, 2007

The house we rented prior to buying our current place was a nightmare come wintertime. Many of the windows were lacking storm windows, the furnace was constantly running and the office/spare room upstairs wasn't usable as it wasn't heated. All this added up to a cold house and massive natural gas bills. We were not happy.

Now that winter seems to have firmly entrenched itself, I'm constantly surprised by how warm it is in our new place. We've got storm windows, a brand new furnace and hot-water heat, and no drafts. We keep it a little chilly but its still comfortable, and so far our gas bills haven't been insane.

One area that has been too warm has been our bathroom. With two older people living in the house the last 40 years, I doubt they were taking multiple showers a day like we are (Jenny does get dirty, natch..I'm kidding, but three of the four people in the house are taking showers almost daily). The one thing we didn't have was a bathroom fan, so the moisture in the air was staying in the bathroom, leading to paint starting to peel in places, like the ceiling and one of the walls near the shower.

We met with our resident plumber/electrician a month or so ago and ordered a bathroom fan, with the hopes he'd get it installed soon after.

The fan has sat in various places in our house for weeks, and now it sits lonely upstairs in the hallway, no doubt hoping it will soon be in its new home doing its work. Hopefully, today will be the day that Ed the plumber comes and installs the fan. It's scheduled, but seeing as how Meadville got dumped on overnight (serious - we must have gotten ten more inches overnight *insert joke here*), I'm not sure if he'll make it.

Let's hope by the time I settle in for an evening constitutional the "battle station will be fully operational."
