Survivorman Live and In Person

Posted March 17, 2008

We caught TV's Survivorman, Les Stroud, live and in person this weekend at the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, NY.

If you've never seen Survivorman, the premise is pretty simple. Les Stroud heads off somewhere to survive, by himself with no crew or other supplies, for 7 days. He films everything himself, and gives survival tips and tricks related to each locale. He's been in the Kalahari desert, Alaska, on the beach, and even once was in a liferaft for seven days. It's intense, and you get a good idea of what it would take to survive if some emergency ever did arise.

He did three Q&A sessions during the day, and each one was packed beyond belief. The talks were great and he's very charismatic. He did a great job connecting with not only the kids also the adults. Brad and I waited nearly an hour in a long line to meet him and hopefully get a quick picture with him.

I've met a a few somewhat famous people and from my experience on Saturday, Les is the real deal. He was nice, talked to us for a few moments while he signed some photos, and posed for a quick picture. He was real - even telling us that his off-the-grid house still wasn't all the way complete and he wanted to do more shows about it.

It was a fun trip and a thrill to meet Les. Here's a quick video I took at the event, as Les talks about swimming in the Arctic Ocean.
