That's Erie Weather For You

Posted November 24, 2007

After yesterday's ErieBlogs.com meeting of the minds, the family and I headed to Cleveland for Thanksgiving Part Deux with my parents and sister's family. We stopped for air in the tires and the snow started. We were lucky and had missed most of it Thursday and Friday morning - but despite there being mostly crystal clear blue skies around the area, the snow was falling quickly and heavily.

We got on I-90 and started East, and by the time we got to the 79 interchange (I think about a mile, tops), the visibility dropped to zero and the roads were very slick. An accident a few hundred yards ahead of us started us all slipping and sliding as all the drivers tried to stop. There's nothing scarier then seeing the trailer on a big truck start to jacknife in front of you. After the car right in front of started to slide off the road, we too stopped and that was the end of Jenny driving.

I took over and we decided to take the back roads to Cleveland (back roads being Routes 20 and 2). We exited 90 at Route 837 (Sterretania Road) and the roads were still covered but slightly more passable.

Then, the Erie weather miracle occurred.

Seriously, not 10 minutes later, as we headed to Route 20, the sun came out and road became more and more clear before our eyes. It went from snow covered to slush to wet in 3 miles. As we crossed over 90 again, it was wet, but clear and traffic was moving at a normal speed. A chorus of Double-U Tee Effs arose from the car.

A quick consultation with the GPS and we were back on 90 headed to Cleveland. By the time we got to Ashtabula, the roads were dry and by the time we got to the east side of the Cleveland there wasn't even snow on the ground. As I write this and look outside the window, all I see are leaves that need to be raked - no white stuff.

And no - I will not be raking. Brad and I have a turkey to make. We must have looked pretty dumb late last night at the Giant Eagle buying a turkey the day after Thanksgiving, but that's a separate post.

After I left our little meetup, I headed out to North East to pick up Gina and experienced white out conditions to sunny and beautiful with no snow.

Welcome home I guess.
