Turned Down

Posted January 4, 2008

Thanks to Kristen, I was reminded that I hadn't updated everyone on whether or not I'd be taking the Assessor position here in Crawford County.

Here's the update:

I did some calling around local government offices, and what they conveniently left off the letter was that this position was a per-capita assessor, which is basically a door-to-door census taker position that pays minimum wage. One seriously would have to go door-to-door updating the tax rolls, confirming ages of people over 18, and enter these into a big book. You would get paid though for any time you spend working on the book.

That's it? My first thought was what a bummer, I had big plans for the county if I were to be Property Assessor. My second thought is why is this an elected position? Why is this task not outsourced to some third-party? Seems awfully inefficient to me. And what happens if both people turn down this role, as I guess the other person may have done. I emailed with him a few times thanks to the comment he left on my first post, but haven't heard back from him since.

So thus ends my brief, yet illustrious political career. I'm bummed it turned out the way it did, but now I can plan better for next election. I'll start planning what I want to run for in the next primary election in April.

I'm now taking suggestions as well as campaign staff applications.
